The History of CBD and Cannabis Use for Wellness
Cannabis has a long history of use for wellness, dating back over 5,000 years. The first recorded use of cannabis for medicinal purposes was in ancient China around 3000 B.C. Early Chinese civilizations recognized the healing potential of hemp, and it quickly spread to other cultures throughout the centuries. Hemp played a significant role in maintaining wellness long before the advent of modern medicine.
As civilizations advanced, people began to document the therapeutic properties of cannabis, with hemp being a key part of traditional remedies. However, with the rise of modern pharmaceuticals, such as opioids, cough syrups, and sleep aids, the use of hemp-based remedies gradually declined.
In 1970, the Controlled Substances Act was passed in the United States, which classified cannabis as a Schedule I substance, effectively banning the possession of any form of cannabis, including hemp. Despite the federal ban, researchers continued to explore the potential benefits of hemp, and studies into its medicinal properties persisted.
In the 1990s, cannabis began to re-enter the conversation around medical treatments. In 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical cannabis for specific conditions, marking a significant shift despite the federal prohibition.
Finally, in 2018, the Farm Bill was signed into law, which legalized hemp containing less than 0.3% THC at the federal level. This bill opened the door for the production and sale of hemp-derived CBD products in many states, while some states have also legalized the use of marijuana for medical and recreational purposes.
Today, CBD is experiencing a resurgence as a natural wellness option, offering many people a safe and effective alternative to traditional pharmaceuticals.
